Logo Design – Beth Taylor Weyand
Beth is a designer, artist, and educator. She believes in using design to promote understanding and further ideas. She grew up on Martha’s Vineyard and currently lives in Portland, Maine.
Beth completed an MFA in Graphic Design at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011, a BFA in Graphic Design at Maine College of Art in 2008, and a BA in Social Science and Visual Art at Bennington College in 2003.
Along with her love for art and design, she is an avid nester, caretaker of fuzzy beings, and swimmer of oceans.
Web Design – Michael Cain
Michael Cain is a Portland, Maine-based web developer. Born and raised in North Carolina, he moved to New England after graduating from the University of North Carolina with his then-girlfriend (now-wife), Meredith, and then-crazy (now-crazy) black lab, in search of adventure, good food, and great beer.
In general, he spends his days working to fine-tune the theme experience for new users on WordPress.com as a developer at Automattic, his evenings blogging about food and travel on mapandmenu.com, and his nights dreaming about how to make tomorrow’s WordPress blogs and sites even better.
Keynote Speaker – Mel Choyce, Automattic
We are excited to announce Mel Choyce as this year’s keynote speaker!
Mel Choyce is a Design Engineer at Automattic, WordPress core committer, and co-organizer for the Boston WordPress community. She loves big typography, cold brew coffee, and craft beer. You can find her on twitter @melchoyce.
Introducing WordCamp Maine 2016’s Wapuu!
That’s wapuu, plural!
So what’s a wapuu?
It all started when Matt Mullenweg (the co-founder of WordPress) went to Japan in 2009. While there the Japanese WordPress community asked him if they could create a mascot. Matt said yes as long as it was GPL licensed and designed by an illustrator who understands the open source community. The community asked Kazuko Kaneuchi, who had experience in creating the Japanese NetBeans mascot, Neko-bean.

Since then, wapuu has spread outside of Japan – WordCamp US, Australia, Prague, and others have all released versions of the character. And don’t forget our very own lumberjack wapuu from last year. There are even paper dolls, a card game, plugins, a VR experience, and more!
Stephen Quirk, an Automattician and WordCamp Maine organizer, made the fisherman-and-prey-inspired version for this year’s event.
