While there the Japanese WordPress community asked him if they could create a mascot. Matt said yes as long as it was GPL licensed and designed by an illustrator who understands the open source community. The community asked Kazuko Kaneuchi, who had experience in creating the Japanese NetBeans mascot, Neko-bean.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2013wapuu fan club<\/p>\n<p>Since then, wapuu has spread outside of Japan \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/2015.us.wordcamp.org\/2015\/11\/17\/introducing-benpuu\/\" target=\"_blank\">WordCamp US<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2016.sunshinecoast.wordcamp.org\/2016\/02\/12\/meet-our-wapuu-wapoolaba\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/2016.prague.wordcamp.org\/wapuu-king\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prague<\/a>,\u00a0and others\u00a0have all released versions of the character. \u00a0And don&#8217;t forget <a href=\"https:\/\/2015.maine.wordcamp.org\/introducing-wordcamp-maines-wapuu\/\" target=\"_blank\">our very own lumberjack wapuu from last year<\/a>. \u00a0There are even <a href=\"http:\/\/albinofruit.com\/portfolio\/wapuu-dress-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">paper dolls<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wptavern.com\/wordcamp-miami-wapuuno-cards-now-available-on-github\">a card game<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/wapuufall\/\" target=\"_blank\">plugins<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/spacewapuu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">a VR experience<\/a>, and more!<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Quirk, an <a href=\"http:\/\/automattic.com\" target=\"_blank\">Automattician<\/a> and WordCamp Maine organizer, made the fisherman-and-prey-inspired version for this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>You can &#8220;catch&#8221; this wapuu in\u00a0sticker form at WordCamp Maine 2016!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s wapuu, plural!
